Introduction

Here we are guys!
Finally I can put myself to the test of the real passion of my life : to dismantle objects !
I have started my career since I was seven  (I was an infant prodigy) when , armed with a big hammer and a little screwdriver I tried to dismantle the fridge !
I still remember my mom wasn’t really happy about my idea !
And now, twenty years later, I have come back to explain to you (the leopard cannot change his spots !) how to dismantle an Axim X50v !
Remember that with the following procedure I’m going to invalidate the guarantee permanently !
If you are worrying about  the health of my PDA take heart ! First of all you must know that the PDA is not mine (if not like hell ! I wouldn’t have dismantled it)
Lastly trust me..it’s in good hands !
Apparently the procedure seems very easy, but actually it’s a somewhat delicate operation and for your mental health I strongly advice you not to emulate unless you are really really qualified.
If you have a good knowledge of elecronics, for example, you can use these advices to replace the backup battery or the display (when the guarantee expires) by yourself.
To begin, you need a set of  little screwdriver (like those of a watch repairer) and a digital camera.
You need also a little patience and a touch of luck…nothing else !
Well, let’s start…

Image
(On the left we can see the gum pins we have to remove…like the four screws on the right)

Dismantling

Before beginning, I suggest you to do the backup of all the files you have into the PDA.
Then, remove the battery, the nib, any memory cards and the protection of the SD/CF slot.
Now put a cloth on the table where you are working and place on it the PDA with the battery facing us.
The cover of our axim is fixed thanks to four screws placed under the four gum pins that we’ll remove using the point of the screwdriver ;
They are fixed to the PDA with a sort of biadhesive tape and so It’s enough to appeal on them to take them off.
Once you ‘ve eliminated the pins you can see the four screws.

 Image

The screw in the top on the right is covered by a sort of seal (it’s an adhesive little white stamp);
Removing it you  invalidate the guarantee permanently….now, after you have removed the seal, you can see that the four screws are made in a very particular kind and it’s very difficult to find a specific tool to unscrew them….but if you have some patience you can remove them with a little  slot screwdriver.
Now we have to do the most delicate operation of all the procedure : open the PDA  removing the two parts of the cover.
Take the PDA in your hands with the display facing us and with a finger try to separate the frontal cover from the body of the PDA.

 Image

Be carefully doing this operation because the cover is very delicate !! an excessive mechanical stress could easily damage the cover.
Now we have to continue putting a little knife under the perimeter of the cover and prize it carefully to complete the separation…then lift the frontal cover ;
Now we can admire the heart of our Axim X50v..fantastic: good both inside and outside !

 Image

We can immediately notice the big display, the buttons and the little microphone.
Now we have to take off the back of the cover and put again the PDA on the table with the display facing us.

 Image

A sort of  black seal is still adherent to the printed circuit board ; to remove it we have to unscrew the four little row screws.

The display is connected to the printed circuit board by two flexible connections :
These two flexible connections are bonded to the PDA by two connectors placed on the electronic board.

 Image

Now we have to act on the connectors to remove the flexible connections; good, now we can remove our display.

Here as our Axim X50v it appears to this point of the operation.

Operations

We can immediately see the good quality of the circuits.
Our attention is for the graphical chip Intel 2700, characteristic quality of our PDA.
Thanks to this fantastic chip..we can declare that the Axim X50v is the best Pocket Pc I have ever seen.
We can also see the “audio section” : to replace the microphone or the headphone lead is very simple and we can find these components everywhere….but, before install, we have to verify the compatibility with the originals.

 Image
(On the left we can see the graphical chip , on the right the little microphone)

Below on the right, we can see the “famous” backup battery !
To replace it is very simple, but remember...it’s very difficult to find the spare part.
In the center of the PDA we can see the microswitch used to verify the lock system of the room battery.
On the left side of the PDA we can see the microbuttons for the wireless connection and for the audio recording…and then, upper there is the microswitch used to block all the buttons.
Upward we can see the IR port, the start button and a led that indicates the working connections (Bluetooth, wi-fi).
In case of problem while reproducting audio (vibrations, absence of signal)  we can take a look to the tiny reproduction device placed immediately down the buttons ; to reach this device we have only to lift the support of display : be carefully doing this operation because the support is connected to the principal electronic circuit by a flexible connection.

(on the left we can see the microswitch of the room battery and the green backup battery. on the right we can see the headphone lead)

In case of problem with the display we can replace it.
We have to find a compatible display, putting it in the specific seat and connecting it to the specific connectors placed on the main board.
Apparently the procedure seems very easy, but actually it’s a somewhat complicated operation.

 Image

Good, now we can recompose our PDA without forgetting to proceed very carefully.

Endings

Well, we have just taken a look to this wonderful Dell PDA.
I strongly advice you not to emulate unless you are really really qualified !
Next time we will see how to increase the ram of our PDA.
My staff is always at the incessant research of suppliers who can command compatible replacements like backup battery and display.
The undersigned and all the Nemesys Staff will not take the responsibility for any damage to people or object resulting from the contents of this article.
My warmest thanks to all of people involved in the realization of this article…special thanks for the translators, the graphic designers , and for the PR administrators …..and very very many thanks for the reading public!

Here you can find parts of exchange for the Axims X50v.
The  Touch Screen layer costs, in the moment in which I write, 85 $
The battery of Backup, 15 $
Thanks Bartman and Bebo for the signaling.

 Best regards, Nemesys Staff
