Many games have been released lately, which take advantage of thel Dell x50v/x51v’s 3D graphic’s potential. One of these is Geo Rally EX developed by IonFX. This is a remake of the famous Geo Rally, from which it “steals” the basic idea. Geo Rally EX has been completely redesigned in terms of playability and graphics.
The game:
We notice the new 3D mask as soon as we start the game: |
|
| After a short presentation we are asked to create a new identity with a new name: |
| We can now chose the game’s skill level. Strangely there are only two levels, instead of the usual 3. |
Something that catches our attention immediately, is that the game has been translated in Italian… as well as a ton of other languages.
The start menu is simple and clear: |
| We can change a few options from the OPTION menu, including volume, SFX volume and MUSIC volume. |
| Or we can obviously change commands keys, which can be other STYLUS or HARDWARE KEYS. |
| We can also chose the screen orientation. Best results are obtained with landscape mode. |
Let’s get to the actual game. With the AUTOS button we can select the car we want to use. To begin with there’s only one car available, but as we win our races, more and more cars will be available for use: |
| We can even change our cars colors, lots of colors available here. |
Once we select the car, we can chose our track. As with real rallies, we have to chose the event first, and then the lap. Lots of tracks are available in this game. In this case we have selected MEDITERRANEAN rally and the first lap: |
We tap OK and we can finally start! The graphic now changes completely The textures are finally worth their name, and the background detail is amazing. The VGA support is greatly implemented and the overall graphic design is much higher than the average game. |
The framerate is high and smooth, hence, the whole game is a pleasure to play and it never skips a frame. Eventhough the details are peculiar and well take care of, the game can still be improved, perhaps in a future version 2. The controls are very precise, and sudden breaks and curves are very well simulated, although there isn’t a differentiation between break and HAND break, which is essential in a Rally game. On a positive note, we can actually change the viewing point. The same track can be driven on at night, day, or sunset. Unfortunately the choice of this is random, it would have been nice to be able to chose: |
There are many scenaries available, from mountains to forest, to small towns. Overall the backgrounds and scenaries are very well implemented, although they do look slightly squared. The concrete on the road is fantastic, and looks real.
Below are some more screen shots: |

Conclusions:
This really is a good game. We’ve waited for it for a long time, but it was worth the wait. The two best parts are the playability and the graphics, and although in the future, even better graphic development will be possible, this implementation is still very commendable. Having said that, I can only hope that in the future, devices such as the x50v and the PSP will come together to create a ludicrous device, with so much potential. We appreciate the effort that IonFX put in the development of this title, e also appreciate the Multilanguage features. I have personally spotted some minor annoyances, like menus that don’t resize correctly in portrait mode, but as I said, these are only minor faults.
